Mitate Shrine

 


Mitate Shrine is the main shrine of Saijo in the mountains of Higashihiroshima, and is located just north of the towns main railway station.


It moved to this location in 1910, along with the nearby Wakamiya, Hachiman, Ebisu, Kanazaki, and Daiichi shrines.


The Otateinari Shrine is on the approach to the main shrine.


The original Mitate Shrine is said to have been founded in 706 after the local people prayed to Gozu Tenno and successfully stopped a plague.


Gozu Tenno has been associated with Susano for a long time, but since the Meiji Period all instances of Gozu Tenno have been officially changed to Susano.


Along with Susano, the other main kami listed are Kotoshironushi, and Ichikishimahime.


The shrine has numerous pairs of komainu, in a variety of styles.


Most seem to date to the mid 19th century before the shrine moved to the current location.


One pair date to the early 20th century, after the move.


It seems that before the Meiji Period it was called Gion Shrine.


In the mid 20th century a branch of Matsuo Shrine was established in the grounds.


Matsuo Shrine is the patron shrine of sake brewing, and, like Fushimi Inari, was established by the Hata Clan.


Saijo is one of the major sake brewing towns in Japan, and often calls itself  the Sake Capital.


Though right in the centre of the town the shrine is within a large park and so has plenty of greenery

Ushitora Shrine Fukuyama

 


Ushitora Shrine is said to be the oldest shrine in Fukuyama.


It is said to have been founded as Gozu Tenno Shrine in the early 12th century when the area that is now Fukyama was a big estate of the Fujiwara Clan.


In  1334 it was moved to its current location and renamed Akitsushima shrine after Izanagi was also enshrined here.


When Fukuyama Castle was constructed the shrine was in the NE direction of the castle and so was supported by the lords of the castle as a kimon, demon gate to protect from the NE. 


Gozu Tenno would seem to be originally of Hindu origin and in Japan became known as the god of plagues, both as cause and prevention. The origin of the Gion Matsuri , Gozu Tenno was widely enshrined throughout Japan and equated with Susano. Gion Shrines, Yasaka Shrines, and others were all originally devoted to Gozu Tenno but in Meiji officially became shrines to Susano.


Fukuyama Ushitora Shrine appeared in a 2022 TV program and has since become even more popular as a shrine for seeking protection.

Susanoo Shrine Fujito

 


After another couple of kilometers walking down the Kurashiki River from the Misaki Shrine I crossed the river to head south and came upon this substantial village shrine.


It was originally called Gyoeki Shrine but changed its name to Susanoo Shrine in 1868.


It was founded in 888.


Architecturally it was simple and uninteresting.


A male-female pairing of Bitchu Kagura masks probably represent Susano and Kushinada.


There were multiple secondary shrines in the grounds including an Inari Shrine and an Akiba Shrine.

Asaharasan Anyoji Temple

 


Anyoji Temple is located just below Asahara Pass in the mountains between Kurashiki and Soja.


It was a large and important temple complex in earlier times and is now a little off any of the main tourist routes.


Its origins lie in the late 8th century when it is said Kobo Daishi performed ceremonies here before he travelled to China. Many sources suggest the involvement of a legendary mink, Hoon Daishi, who is said to have founded 48 temples in what is now the Okayama area, including Kinzanji 


The honzon of Anyoji is Bishamonten, and many statues of him, at least 42 I believe.


In the 11th century, when the temple was very powerful, 100 life-size statues of Bishamonten were carved. Some of the surviving ones are on display in the Jogando.


One of the pair of Nio guardians in front of the temple bell. Weighing about 11 tons is said to be the biggest temple bell in the Chugoku and Shikoku region.


During the height of its power quite a few high-ranking monks served here.


In 1201 the temple converted from Tendai to Shingon.


Many treasures have been excavated from sutra mounds built behind the temple in the 11th century.


A castle stood on the mountain not far from the temple complex and in 1336 much of the huge temple complex was destroyed in a battle between the Northern and Southern Courts.


The temple was rebuilt and continued to be an important centre.


In 1667 the temples surrounding Anyoji were closed down by the anti-Buddhist policy of the ruling Ikeda Clan. Perhaps Anyoji was spared because of its syncretic nature?

In Japan Bishamnten has become associated with the Tiger because of a legend about Shotoku Taishi.


The main hall has a shimenawa and there are multiple Torii in the grounds, indicating this is a syncretic site where distinctions between Buddhism nd Shinto are blurred. In the Daishido, photo below, is a statue of Zao Gongen, protector of the mountain, and the main deity of the syncretic Shugendo.


The new Daishi-do was under construction when I visited but opened in 2018.

Possibly this is a small sculpture of Fukurokuju, one of the Seven Lucky Gods.


The photo below is of what is now called Susano Shrine, though earlier it was known as Gion-sha and Gozu Tenno-sha. It was established here in the late 9th century.
