Kasubuchi to Hamahara Bridge on the Scenic Gonokawa River

 

I started  day 4 of my walk up the Gonokawa River to its source at the former Kasubuchi Railway Station, the place I had finished day 3.

I backtracked across the Akebono Ohashi Bridge to reach the other bank of the river. My plan is to walk this side of the river to the source and then go back downriver to the mouth on the opposite bank.

Just downstream is the railway bridge that also carried pedestrians. Since this photo was taken, it has been dismantled as the Sanko Line closed down and the bridges and other infrastructure of the railway are slowly being removed.

Coming into Kasubuchi at the end of the third day I was walking just about straight north. Leaving Kasubuchi I am soon walking almost directly south. There is a horseshoe bend in the river here.

This side of the river is generally the least populated. The main road is on the bank I am leaving. The train line used to switch banks.

Up ahead is the Hamahara Bridge. Hamahara is on the opposite bank and was the end of the Sanko Line until the 1970s when it was extended and finally reached Miyoshi.

Its cherry blossom season......

The Hamahara Bridge was built in 1975 and is a two-arch design.
